Born on June 12, 1980, to Makur and Alaak Banek, in Sudan, Agok's journey through life was marked by challenges and triumphs, ultimately defining him as a symbol of the indomitable human spirit.
As one of the original Lost Boys of Sudan, he endured hardships that would have tested the resolve of the strongest souls. Yet, Agok's spirit remained unbroken, fueled by his dreams of a better life.
After earning an Associate's degree, Agok pursued his passion for nursing with unwavering dedication. His career path was not merely a profession but a calling, where he found purpose in caring for others. His journey to the United States was a testament to his resilience, as he embraced the opportunity to live the American Dream.
Agok's presence at Luther Park Community in Des Moines, Iowa, was more than just that of a Nursing Associate; he was a beacon of empathy and kindness to all who crossed his path. His love for his community, both Sudanese and American, was apparent in every interaction. His infectious smile and boundless sense of humor brought joy to those around him, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Agok Makur Banek's life reminds us that adversity can be overcome with courage and determination.
He is survived by his children, Makur Agok, and Alaak Agok; brother, Mabor Makur; and cousin, Bol Nhial.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Achol Makur.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale, Iowa with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
Guests are invited to attend a gathering at New Jerusalem Church, 2301 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa 50310, following the burial.
