Alvin Eugene Coles

To livestream the funeral click the "Tribute Wall" tab above and then click watch now on the "Live Webcast" Alvin Eugene Coles, 91, of Des Moines and Maxwell passed away of Congestive heart Failure on Sunday January 10, 2021. Alvin Coles, son of William and Etta Coles, was born December 24, 1929 in Hardin County. He spent over 70 years in Maxwell, where he was very active in the community. He was an Elder with the Disciples of Christ Church there, prior to moving to Des Moines. He then became active in the Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Des Moines. On June 6, 1954 he was united in marriage to Pat Kahler of Maxwell. They lived and worked in the Maxwell area most of their lives. After Pat’s death, Alvin married Helen Dawson on June 17, 2006. Alvin is survived by his wife Helen (Dawson) Coles. Two sons Lance (Linda) Coles of Ankeny and Mike (Deb) Coles of Huxley. Two step sons Sam and Kirk Dawson of Des Moines, and step daughter Dale Paula (Pete) Allen of Hamilton, Ohio. Six grandchildren; Staci (Eric) Mickelson of Newhall, California; Andrew Coles of Des Moines; and Dalton Coles (Abby Pagliai) of Newton; Courtney (Jay) Thompson of Des Moines; Zach Coles of Studio City, California; and McKenzie (Chris) Maggio of Stilwell, Kansas; Step-grandson Jeff (Heidi) Conn. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren: Keaton, Felix and Milo Mickelson; Kylie and Drew Coles and Journey Taylor; Ella, Wynn and Mick Thompson and Izzie Conn. He was preceded in death by his parents William Coles and Etta (Kelderhouse) Coles. His wife Pat Coles and his siblings Orville (John) Coles; Vern Coles; Ruby Robertson; Wendell Coles, and Viola Stringham. He graduated from Maxwell High in 1947. He then went on to electronics school in Chicago. His friends called him Pee Wee. Alvin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska. He was an avid Cubs and Iowa State Fan. He enjoyed dancing, with his wife Pat all around Story County. He would frequent Lake Robbins, Prairie Meadows and the Ankeny and Des Moines VFW’s with wife Helen. He was on the Maxwell City Council for several years and served as Mayor. He played disc golf and was instrumental in the placement of the Disc Golf Course in the Maxwell City Park. He was active in sports and enjoyed camping. Alvin was very involved with the Maxwell VFW and American Legion. He ran a gas station in Maxwell, worked at Maytag in Newton and John Deere in Ankeny, ran an insurance agency and worked (and retired from) Donnelley Marketing in Nevada, Iowa.
