Brian was born on October 4, 1951, in Des Moines, the son of James William and Mary Jane (Sumner) Haines. He grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1969. He met Charlotte Cain when they were both working at Sears and the couple were married on March 1, 1975, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Cumming. Brian began working for Sears in 1969 as an appliance repair technician and concluded a 33 year career upon retiring in 2002. He was not one to join groups, however, he served as a volunteer fireman for the Truro Fire Department, having served as its treasurer and Fire Chief. Brian enjoyed woodworking, antique car restoration and his family recalls how he could repair anything, having come to their rescue many times to help them fix something. He also loved music, whether playing his banjo, harmonica or simply listening to music, especially Bob Dylan or the Beatles. He also enjoyed learning about history particularly the Civil War. All this said, he was a devoted family man who loved his family dearly and was always available to help them any way he could. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Charlotte (Cain) Haines of Truro, three daughters, Amanda (Todd) Penisten of Urbandale, Emily Haines (Jon Van Der Veer) of Johnston, Margaret (Daniel) Llewellyn of Norwalk; five grandchildren, Christopher and Robert Penisten, Hazel and Clara Van Der Veer and Bailey Llewellyn; his seven siblings, Duane Haines, Rebecca Ervin, Jim Haines, Ramona Sharp, Rachel Crandall, Schuyler Haines and Billie Haines; his 38 nieces and nephews, in-laws, extended family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
