Carolyn Matlage, 84, of rural Winterset died Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at her home. A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 10, at Ochiltree Funeral Service, with family present to receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 11, at the Winterset Community Church in Winterset. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation and online condolences can be left at ochiltree.com. Carolyn Jean Nicodemus, daughter of Arthur and Sophie (O’Gara) Nicodemus, was born January 14, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was united in marriage with Lester Matlage on May 29, 1952 in Des Moines and three children were born to this union. Carolyn sold Avon for 20 years and also worked as the Director of the Challenge Center for 20 years. She had worked at Winterset Care Center North and the Village View Motel as well as being a caring housewife and mother. She attended the Winterset Community Church. Carolyn was a talented cake decorator who loved making her family’s events extra special. She also enjoyed playing marbles and cards, especially solitaire. Carolyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed by all who knew her. Carolyn is survived by her husband of 66 years, Les Matlage of Winterset; children, Phillip (Sheri) Matlage of Winterset; Nick Matlage of Buna, TX; Gregg (Leann) Matlage of Winterset; adored special nephew/son, Randy Brose of Des Moines, ten grandchildren; Sarah (Dylan) Enser, Paul (Sarah Pedersen) Matlage; Darrell (Jessica) Matlage; Steven Matlage; Amber Matlage; A.J. Matlage, Travis Matlage, Brooke Matlage, Paige (Brad) Soma, Whitney (David) Hutton; several great grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Donna) Nicodemus of Grimes; sister-in-law, Donna Nicodemus of Altoona; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Sophie Nicodemus; a sister, Marilyn (Pete) Bickle; and two brothers, Art (Elizabeth) Nicodemus and Chuck Nicodemus.
