Carroll Lee York

Carroll Lee York was born at home on a farm in Dallas County to Fred and Ruby (Myers) York. Carroll joined siblings LaVerne, Verle, and Marvel.

Carroll attended a one-room country school in Colfax Township.  He spent his first two years of high school in Redfield before the family moved to the Panora area.  Carroll served as class president of the Panora High School class of 1941.

Carroll entered military service on September 22, 1943.  He served in the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment in World War II.  He was sent to fight in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart.

In 1963, Carroll married the love of his life, Phyllis Ann Spearing. Carroll & Phyllis raised their four boys, Greg, Randy, Kent, and Dan, on the family farm in Panther.

Carroll was active in his church and community.  He served as 4-H leader, Colfax Township trustee, chairman of the United Way in the Adel area, and treasurer of the Dallas County Pork Producers.  He was a long-time member of Panther Creek Church of the Brethren where he served as the stewardship chair.

Carroll & Phyllis loved to travel and fish. Carroll also greatly enjoyed the game of cribbage and became a highly skilled player.  He played the game adeptly up until his final days.  An avid ISU fan, Carroll followed his Cyclones year-round.  The ISU fight song was known to break out occasionally in the York household.  Carroll also spent countless hours following and supporting his sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in their athletic, musical, and theatrical events.

Getting the boys and their families together at the farm for dinners was a joy for Carroll.  Before the dinner was over, you could count on him to say, “We may not have much money, but we sure do eat well.” He encouraged all to enjoy life and often stated, “Have fun while you can!”

Carroll passed into eternal life on November 22, 2022 at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, Iowa.  He is preceded in death by his wife, siblings, and parents.

He is survived by sons Greg (Sue), Randy (Deb), Kent (Michelle), and Dan (Kathy); grandchildren Christine (Michael) Meggison, Caren (Nate) Linderman, Randy York II, Alex (Tasha) York, Hannah (Nick) Caranci, and Samantha York; great grandchildren York, Tess, and Jack Meggison, Everly Linderman, Jaxon, Tucker, and Marley York, and Nash Caranci.

Memorial gifts should be directed to Panther Creek Church of the Brethren.

Those attending the visitation are invited to wear their favorite Iowa State Cyclones gear if they wish.
