Dean L. 'Formerly Adel' Fiscus - Park City

Dean Leonard Fiscus, 74, of Park City, Kansas, formerly of Adel, Iowa passed away November 11, 2015 after a 17 year battle with cancer. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 19, at New Hope Church in Adel. Burial with honors will follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Friends may call after 2 p.m., Wednesday at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Dean, the third of four sons of Clifford and Josie May (Gilbert) Fiscus, was born on the farm north of Jefferson, Iowa on February 22, 1941. The family eventually moved to Rippey, Iowa, where he graduated with the class of 1959. Dean was raised in a Christian home and took hold of his own faith as a young adult. As is common with many of us, his faith journey throughout life included questions, struggles and victories. Thankfully God's love and grace are bigger than our struggles and each of us can have victory through Him. On this journey Dean recognized that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23) separated from God (Romans 6:23) in need of a savior; that the only way to be restored to right relationship with God is through Jesus (John 14:6). Because God loves us, He made a way to restore our relationship with Him (John 3:16). Ephesians 2:4-9 tells us that God reached out to us in love, while we are sinners, and extends mercy and grace to us such that by faith in Him (not our own works) we can be saved. Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross paid the penalty for our sins and by faith in His work on the cross we can claim all of God's promises. Now we know that Dean is with his Heavenly Father (John 14:1-3). One of his favorite passages was Psalm 23. Following graduation, Dean attended the McConnell Airline School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On June 24, 1962, Dean married Rozetta Renner. Dean served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966-1968. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Rozetta was fortunate to join him for much of that time. After Dean's time in the Army, he and Rozetta built their beautiful home together in rural Adel in 1972, doing most of the work themselves. Dean was fond of keeping track of details, and recently told someone exactly how many concrete blocks were used to build the basement! Dean relished time "beside the still waters" of their acreage, and focusing on home and family. Dean and Rozetta were blessed with one son, Bryan. In addition to enjoying home and family, Dean was passionate about aviation. He earned his private pilot license at the age of 17. He later earned his commercial license with instrument and multi-engine ratings. Between the years of 1968 and 1971, Dean flew charter flights for Des Moines Flying Service and SMB Airlines. The remainder of his 45 year career was spent in customer service with Braniff Airways, America West, and United Airlines. He retired in 2005. After 1971, Dean flew primarily for his own enjoyment, passing his love for aviation on to Bryan. Dean owned 2 different private aircraft over the years. He flew the family to the Oshkosh Airventure several times for vacation. He also participated in numerous fly-in events over the years, and enjoyed the friendships he developed in the aviation community. Dean was extremely industrious and gifted mechanically. He enjoyed woodworking, model building, home improvement projects and performing most of the maintenance on the family vehicles and his airplane, teaching Bryan these same skills as he went. This even included working together with Bryan to overhaul the engines on his 1978 El Camino (car) and his 1969 Piper Arrow (airplane). He also used his gifts to build a tree house that was the envy of all of Bryan's childhood friends. The tree house included a loft bedroom, retractable stairs, dutch door, and covered deck. Over the years, Dean and Rozetta enjoyed traveling. Some of Dean's favorite destinations include Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, San Diego and trips to winter in Arizona. Dean was preceded in death by his parents. Those left to cherish Dean's memory are his wife of 53 years, Rozetta, of Park City, Kansas; son, Bryan (Kendi) Fiscus and their children, Jenna, Creed, Natalie, Kaytie, and Paige, of Valley Center, Kansas; brothers Dwayne, Dwight (Rheta), and Delbert (Marilyn); and in-laws Belva (Dallas) Bowman, Norman (Mindy) Renner, Celia (Tim) McCollum; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and has created many fond and loving memories.
