Ed Songer, 56, of Winterset died Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where his family will be present to receive friends during this time. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery, near Patterson at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family. Edward Jay Songer, son of Harold and Catherine (Cortum) Songer, was born February 22, 1959 in Madison County. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1977. He was first married to Michele Marean and three boys were born to this union. Ed was later united in marriage to Connie Wetzel on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1990 at the bride’s home. Ed worked as a transmission mechanic, many will recall his time working for Al’s Transmission in Indianola and he was currently employed by Knudson Transmission Services in Des Moines since 2002. He was a member of the National Hot Rod Association along with several other professional automotive repair associations and served on the Patterson Town Council. Ed loved to race and enjoyed attending racing events. He had a true passion for the vehicles he worked on and the ones he raced. All this said, he was a caring husband, father and grandfather, who cherished the time he was able to spend with his family. Ed is survived by his wife Connie Songer of Patterson; daughter, Rashelle (Kevin) Elliott of Atlantic; 3 sons, Jesse Songer (Josie Sorenson), Matthew (Tina) Songer and Nick (Jordan) Songer all of Winterset; 11 grandchildren, Chancey Richards, Cheyenne Elliott, Dakota, Jayce, Dalton, Sadie, Kaylee, Jaydon, and Barrett Songer, Gage and Carter Booth; two brothers, Bob Songer of Phoenix, AZ and Bill (Paula) Songer of Winterset; sister, Kathy (Neil) Rogers of Laughlin, NV; nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
