Glen Butterfield, 99, of Des Moines (formerly of Peru) died Friday, May 18, 2018, at Calvin Community in Des Moines. A visitation with family present will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, May 21, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, at Ochiltree’s in Winterset with a luncheon immediately following at the funeral home and burial after at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola. Memorials may be directed to the New Bridge Church of Winterset and online condolences may be left at ochiltree.com. Glen Wilson Butterfield was born October 25, 1918, in Warren County, Iowa; the son of William and Pearl (Wilkerson) Butterfield. His marriage to Doris Darr took place in 1943 and to this union two children were born. After Doris’ death, Glen married Janice Comp in 1966 at the First Baptist Church in Winterset. Glen was a devout Christian who enjoyed the preaching of Billy Graham and was a member of the First Baptist Church for many years and served as the Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years. Glen farmed for 65 years on a farm southeast of Winterset where he raised Salers cattle which are a breed of cattle originating in France. He was also a pioneer in cattle breeding. He enjoyed Bluegrass music and in his youth he played guitar with a country band. He also played softball, wrote poetry, enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking and was a great story teller. All this said, he loved his Savior and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved nothing more than time spent with them, especially his grandchildren. Glen is survived by his children, Ruth Ann (Lon) Phillips of Blue Springs, MO, Gerry Butterfield of Des Moines; step-daughters, Norma Comp of Waukee, Linda (Brian) Morrissey of Otley; granddaughter, Valerie McGuire, great granddaughter, Elizabeth McGuire, 4 step-grandchildren; 9 step-great grandchildren; extended family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; spouses, Doris in 1955 and Janice in 2012 and 2 brothers, Wayne and Paul Butterfield.
