Horace Young, 96, of St. Charles, died Friday, October 19, 2018, at West Bridge Care and Rehab in Winterset. A visitation with family present will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 22, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset where a funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be held in the St. Charles Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the St. Charles Fire and Rescue and online condolences can be left at ochiltree.com. Horace Mansel Young was born October 9, 1922, in South Township, Madison County, Iowa, the son of William and Mary (Bond) Young. He graduated from St. Charles High School and served in the US Army Air Force during WWII. Horace was a bookkeeper for Farm Service for over thirty years, retiring in 1985. He also served as Deputy Auditor for Madison County for two years. He was a member of the St. Charles Parish and was a board member for Blair Chapel Church. He took great pride in helping get it to where it is today. He was a member of the Birthday Club and the VFW of Winterset. He liked to cook, play cards, refinish projects and he loved to dance. Dancing was the joy of his life and kept him young. He enjoyed life and loved to spend time with family, especially making memories with his nieces and nephews. Most of all, he enjoyed the twenty years he spent as a Winter Texan and the many friends he met along the way. Horace is survived by his brother, James Young of Ames; nieces and nephews, Roger (Sheryl) Young, Larry (Sherry) Young, Gene (Marjorie) Young, Karen Schultz (Howard Patterson), Linda (Randy) Bittner, Roy (Deb) Young, Peggy (Brad) Mabuce, and Judy (Tom) Young, many great nieces and nephews, extended family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Milton Young; and an infant brother and an infant sister.
