James Nevels

James “Jim or Red” Nevels, 76 years old, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019. A Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 pm with a Funeral Service to follow at 6:00 pm on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale, Iowa 50322. Burial will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, December 13, 2019 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, IA 50003. Jim was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Julio and Katie (Jones) Nevels. He graduated from Washington High School in Natchez, Mississippi in 1961. After high school he served his country in the Air Force for 4 years, followed by 23 years with the Army Reserves. He was married to the love of his life Beverly for 54 years and together they raised their children; Dawn and Jason. Jim worked for Pirelli for 36 years as a tire builder, but in his free time he loved fishing, camping, working in the yard, and spending as much time with family as possible. He was also a big football fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports. He often reminded them to not take themselves or life too seriously. Those who knew Jim certainly appreciated his humorous character and might recall him mentioning to “work smarter, not harder and if you’re not going to use your head, you might as well have two asses.” Jim joins his dogs; Megan, Riley, and Buster in Heaven. As well as being preceded in death by his mother, Katie; sister, Yvonne; and brothers, Wade and Mike. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughter, Dawn (Marion) Cook; son, Jason (Jennifer) Nevels; grandchildren, Grant (1), Dalton, Kaelind, Grant (2), and Grahm. Siblings, Ginner, Elaine, Bud, Lloyd, and Larry, along with numerous other family and friends. Memorial contributions will be allocated to the family so that they can be distributed to the Iowa Veterans Hospital Staff who touched their hearts through this difficult journey.
