Loraina Groth

Visitation: Funeral services will be held 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 23rd, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Winterset; where family will receive friends from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., prior to the evening service. Following services in Winterset, Loraina will be taken to Missouri Valley, Iowa where a Prayer Service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, October 25th at the St. Paul Lutheran Church. The family will gather at St. Paul’s to receive friends from 1:00 until service time Saturday. Burial will immediately follow in the Calhoun Cemetery, Missouri Valley, Iowa. She is survived by her husband, Paul Groth of Thayer; two daughters, Lisa Pitt and husband, Doug of Logan; Teena Groth of Orient; a son, Scott Groth and wife, Lynn; a brother, Kenneth Layton and his wife, Julie; a sister, Peggy Hill and her husband, Pat of Modale; 5 grandchildren (Bryant, Tasha, Barret, Brenden and Caden) Loraina was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Arthur Layton. Loraina ‘Roni’ Mae (Layton) Groth was born August 7, 1945 in Missouri Valley, Iowa; the daughter of Duane Arthur and Inez Loraine (Adams) Layton. After graduation from West Harrison High School in 1963, she attended beauty school in Des Moines where she met her future husband, Paul. Loraina and Paul were married October 23, 1966, at the Church of Christ in Missouri Valley, Iowa. After marriage, they settled on Paul’s Family farm in Warren County where they began farming. All three of their children were born while they lived in Warren County and in 1979 they moved to a farm near Thayer. Loraina was a devoted wife and mother who dedicated much of her time raising her family and helping to manage the family farm. She also worked as a nurse’s aid at the Madison County Hospital and later worked as a truck driver and scale house operator for Schildberg Construction for 17 years, retiring in 2000. Loraina was a member of the American Legion Auxilary of Modale. She enjoyed quilting but most of all she loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.
