Lou Ann Pumphrey

Lou Ann Pumphrey, a compassionate soul with an unwavering dedication to the well-being of others, passed away on August 9, 2023, at the age of 80. Born on July 21, 1943, in Bloomington, IL, she was the cherished daughter of James and Ethel Louise (Riley) Pumphrey.


Growing up in Monmouth, IL, Lou Ann's journey was marked by her determination and passion for learning. She graduated from Monmouth High School and later pursued her academic aspirations at UniIllinois State University, where she earned her bachelor's degree, then went on to the University of Iowa, where she earned a master's degree in sociology. Her academic pursuits paved the way for a life dedicated to understanding and assisting the lives of others.


Upon completing her education, Lou Ann's family relocated from Illinois to Boone, Iowa, where she settled. Her professional path led her to become a dedicated social worker for the State of Iowa, tirelessly advocating for those in need. Lou Ann's work wasn't merely a job—it was a reflection of her genuine care and concern for the well-being of others. Her kindhearted and empathetic nature touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched.


Beyond her professional achievements, Lou Ann had a zest for life that extended into her personal interests. She found joy and solace in crafting, her feline companions, and nurturing connections with both her extended family and newfound friends. Her warm smile and engaging conversations endeared her to everyone she encountered, effortlessly forging bonds and leaving a lasting impression.


Lou Ann's legacy of compassion and kindness lives on through the lives she impacted. She is survived by her loving son, John, and his wife Denise, along with their daughters Emilie  and Abigail; Theresa and husband Martin Carillo, their children Dustin and Tyler, and  her brother Dale (Linda) Pumphrey and their children, James and Julie.


Lou Ann was preceded in death by her beloved parents, James and Ethel Louise Pumphrey, as well as her one true love, Larry Rehbien.


Celebration of life for Lou Ann will be held at a later date in Westfield, Massachusetts with burial at a later date in East Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Bloomington, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
