Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 3rd, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m., Friday, September 2nd at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where family will be present to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family in Phyllis’ name. Phyllis Joan Skaggs was born December 19, 1936 in Mason County, Illinois; the daughter of Grady and Opal (Everitt) Skaggs. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1954 and later received her nursing degree from the Brokaw School of Nursing, Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. Her marriage to Gary William Fisher took place on December 28, 1957 at the Methodist Church in Mason City, Illinois. After receiving her nursing degree, she began her career at Peoria State Mental Hospital and later was employed by Mary Greeley Medical Center and McFarland Clinic in Ames. She also worked at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola and with Quality Healthcare Specialist based out of Des Moines. Most recently, she worked for Unisys Corporation in Des Moines as a medical claims auditor. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the State Nursing Association. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winterset and was active with the UMW Women’s Circle. Phyllis was a beautiful seamstress, loved to camp but most of all she loved any time spent with her family. Phyllis died Monday, August 29, 2011 at Winterset Care Center North. She was 74. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 54 years, Gary Fisher of Winterset; children, Tamara Fisher (John Jones) of Norwalk; Lisa Nicholson (Todd) of Winterset; Kurt Fisher (Julie) of Urbandale; a daughter-in-law, Penny Fisher of West Des Moines; siblings, Leon Skaggs (Sonya) of Park City, MT; Carol Palm (Gordon) of St. Marys, GA; Edwin Skaggs of Aurora, IL; Paul Skaggs of Mason City, IL; Dale Skaggs (Lynda Lambert) of Milwaukee, WI; Dean Skaggs (Pat) of New Carlisle, IN; seven grandchildren, Weston Jones, Tyler Fisher (Lindsey), Austin Fisher, Sam Nicholson, Jessie Nicholson, Devan Fisher, and Charlee Fisher. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Todd Fisher; and a brother, Darrell Skaggs.
