Phyllis Kingsbury

Phyllis Jean Kingsbury, 84, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines, Iowa.

Phyllis was born on May 31, 1938 in Augusta, Kansas to L.D. “Bill” and Violet (Daniels) Kingsbury. She graduated from Abilene High School in 1956. After high school, she attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas and received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in biology. She then attended the University of Oklahoma and earned her doctorate degree in Limnology in 1968. Phyllis moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she taught in the biology department at Drake University until her retirement in 1996. Phyllis never married, but she was a world traveler.

Phyllis enjoyed teaching. She liked to buy and sell antiques and had a booth at the Brass Armadillo in Des Moines. Her friends at the Brass Armadillo will certainly miss her.

Phyllis is survived by her sister, Donna L. (Donald R.) Murphy; nieces, Delynn R. (Robin) Nelson, and Dayna L. (Kent) Tullis; great nieces and nephews, Isaac and Olivia Tullis, and Ella and Ethan Nelson; and great-great nephew Oliver Tullis. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her companion, Bert Haglan.
