Richard Larsen

September 7, 1943 — January 6, 2024

On January 6th, 2024 we lost our beloved husband and father after a progressive illness.

His wife of 60 years, Carla, and son Scott and daughter in law Laura will continue to carry his memory. The weight of his loss has been great and tested our endurance. It has also reminded us of our love and strength. As in all things, Richard had planned for his passing, giving us all the gift of his guidance in our time of grief. At his request, he was able to remain at home surrounded by his family and caregivers. There will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to the South Dakota Wildlife Federation at  https://sdwf.org/.

Near the end of his life, he was asked to share his story. Only partially joking, he asked his caregivers how much time they had to listen.  Richard was always prepared with a story. He shared memories of his late parents, Olaf and Nora Larsen, growing up in Canova, South Dakota, his high school athletic feats, and his long career as the service manager of the Firestone store in Sioux Falls. For years he checked our tire treads and scolded us if the tires were from Goodyear. As we heard him recount his story, it was clear he lived a life that was made full by family, friends, and the unbelievable joy he took in fishing.

Richard married Carla on June 2, 1963. She understood fishing was his passion and tolerated all the tails of his adventures. He was so thankful for the unsurpassed care Carla provided throughout his life. Her strength was heroic. With her support, his wish to remain at home was fulfilled. He loved coming to Scott’s farm, the aptly named “Larsenville” to fish in the pond. Each time he came, he arrived earlier and earlier so he could get more casting in before lunch.

Time proved too fleeting for him to reach out to all of you, though it was on the list of things he wanted to do.  We are telling the story he wanted you to know. There was nothing more important to him than his family. Frank, Don, Gene, Anna and Floyd meant the world to him. He loved their families, celebrated their triumphs and mourned their losses. His brothers in law Bryan Brace, Wayne Klingberg and sister in law Norma Larsen as well as numerous nieces and nephews were adored. Richard loved photos and kept pictures of you all close to share. He was preceded in death by his sisters in law Shirley and Marguerite as well as Carla’s parents Lola and Wilfred Cline, also Carla’s sister Brenda Klingberg. He missed them all, especially Marguerite’s cooking.  While it was hard to move away from his siblings this past year, we were thankful to have him close when he needed more assistance.

For those who were unaware, Richard loved fishing and the community of friends he developed. He would want you to know the pictures and tales of fishing adventures you shared meant so much. We feel we know you all personally through the stories he shared with us. The challenges of life faded for him while landing a big bass.

He was so appreciative of your love and support during his life. We are thankful for your love and support in his death. We will continue to honor him by cherishing you and finding joy in his memory.
