Susan Klaassen

Susan Klaassen passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 11, 2018, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Susan was born November 7, 1950 to Orville and Mildred Sundet and grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She graduated from Augustana University in Sioux Falls with a degree in Social Work. In 1973 Susan married Curtis Klaassen. They moved to the Des Moines area in 1975. She and Curtis raised a son and daughter on an acreage outside of Van Meter, Iowa. Susan was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling the country and quiet evenings by the campfire. She especially loved seeking out treasures at antique shops, thrift stores and flea markets. Her interest in treasures was supported by an active membership in the Questers Van Meter “Lik-Skillet” Chapter. She also enjoyed working with children as a teaching assistant at Jordon Creek Elementary School and was remembered by many of her students. She retired from West Des Moines Community Schools in 2006. Left behind to cherish her memories is her husband of 45 years, Curtis, son Aaron (girlfriend Amanda), daughter Sara (fiancée Mark); and sister Norene (Mike) Paulson as well as other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, February 15, 2018, from 4-7 PM at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 16, 2018 at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Urbandale. Burial will be at 2 PM at the Van Meter Cemetery.
