Thomas J. Hopewell

Thomas James Hopewell, Sr. passed away Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. He was 81. Tom was born December 16, 1933 in Burlington, Iowa. He was the son of Thomas and Mabel Hopewell of Burlington, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, February 23rd, at St. John's Catholic Church in Adel. Burial will be at 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in West Burlington. Visitation will be Sunday, February 22nd at the church where family will greet friends from 3-7 p.m. Tom served his country in the U.S. Army, a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, and dedicated his life in Law Enforcement for 30 years. He was first a Deputy with the Des Moines County Sheriff's office and then was employed by the State of Iowa, Department of Public Safety where he served with both the Division of Criminal Investigation and the Division of Narcotics. He had an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from DMACC. He was also Treasurer for Dallas County. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed attending the many sporting activities of his children and grandchildren. Tom is survived by his wife Shirley; children, Lisa (John) Daugherty; Tom Hopewell III; Brenda (Bill) Vernon; Karen (Joel) Jacobsen; his brother, Mark Hopewell from Burlington; grandchildren, Adam Daugherty and Ashley (Joe) Morris; Mason, Jarrett and Hogan Hopewell; Taylor and Haley Vernon; Molly, Abby and Emma Jacobsen; 3 great grandchildren, Madi, Frank and Jack Morris, as well as a host of nieces and nephews and other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; sisters, Betty Ertz, Barbara Cain and Beverly Ann Hopewell; brother, Dennis Hopewell; and son, Mike Hopewell.
