Thomas Phillip King, youngest child of Louis and Anna (McKinney) King, died Thursday, November 4, 2021, of esophageal cancer at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, with family near. He was 61 years of age. Tom was a lifelong resident of Madison County, graduating from Winterset High School in 1979. He was a carpenter by trade, skilled in both finish work and framing, employing those skills to help in the restoration of the old Winterset train depot at the Madison County Historical Complex. Tom lived life quietly, on his terms, with the company of his longtime canine companion, Sadie, and the companionship of many loving and giving friends. He loved the natural world and outdoor pursuits, including fishing, trapping and camping. He was preceded in death by his parents, eldest sister Margaret Barker, brothers-in-law Richard Barker and Richard Fairholm, and sister-in-law Barb King. Grieving his loss are his surviving siblings, Patrick King, Jerry (Bev) King, Leo King (Barb Brady), Luella Fairholm, Carolyn (Lyle) Rothfus, Kathleen (Keith) Churchill, Barbara (Al) Birdsell), Dorothy (Rod) Wedemeyer, Nancy (Gene) Stephenson, Rita (Mike) Drysdale, and Juanita (Tom) Beeler, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family honored Tom's request that no services be held with a private burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Irish Settlement. For those who wish to do so, memorial contributions may be directed to the Madison County Conservation Board, Winterset. For those who knew and loved Tom, his outcome and subsequent death are a great sadness.
