William Todd Purcell

William 'Bill' Purcell, a dedicated patriot, loving family man, and lifelong learner, passed away at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. Born on April 12, 1951, to Lemuel and Mary Jo (Maxwell) Purcell, Bill leaves behind a legacy of service, education, and a passion for hobbies that brought him joy.

After graduating from high school, Bill pursued his passion for history by attending Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in History. A strong sense of duty led him to enlist in the Navy, where he served with pride during the Vietnam War. Bill's dedication and commitment to his country were admirable and demonstrated his selflessness and bravery. He served for over 9 years and left the Navy as a lieutenant.

Upon completing his military service, Bill returned to Iowa State University to further his education. He obtained another degree, this time in Industrial Technology, showcasing his versatility and eagerness to acquire new skills. Bill's thirst for knowledge led him to pursue a master's degree in Adult Education and Development from Drake University, underscoring his commitment to lifelong learning and personal growth.

Throughout his professional life, Bill worked as a Quality Engineer for Bridgestone Americas Inc., applying his expertise and attention to detail in ensuring high standards of excellence. His commitment to precision and efficiency earned him the respect of his colleagues and contributed to his successful career.

In his leisure time, Bill found solace in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed watching television, with a particular fondness for following the Chicago Cubs and exploring the realms of science and history through captivating shows. Reading was another cherished pastime, where he could immerse himself in new worlds and gain knowledge about various subjects.

Bill took pride in maintaining and caring for his home, creating a comfortable sanctuary for himself and his wife. In his younger years, he nurtured a creative side by constructing model airplanes and ships, displaying his meticulousness and attention to detail.

Bill is survived by his wife of 34 years, Anita; niece, Sarah (Hugh Sheridan) Purcell; sisters-in-law, Mary Purcell, Rose Dittmer, Phillis Dittmer, and Diana Dittmer; and his cat, Hannah. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ed Purcell; brother-in-law, Ronald Dittmer; and cats, Star and Blackie.

A graveside service will be held in the St. Mary’s Cemetery near Dallas Center on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be donated to the Iowa Veterans Home Tree Fund in memory of Bill. Online Condolences may be left to the family at www.caldwellparrish.com.
