Alfred Roy Farber was born March 16, 1944, in Arbor Hill, Iowa, the son of Fred Conard and Vivian (Greenbeck) Farber. Fred died from a farming accident shortly after Al’s birth and Vivian married Henry Farber who adopted Al. He graduated from Creston High School in 1963. Al was united in marriage with Barbara May Thompson on April 30, 1964, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Barb passed away November 18, 2011. Al started his working career at a saw mill and transitioned into farming; from there Al started working at Des Moines Golf & Country Club and retired after 22 years. He was one of the head men on the greens and grounds and did the maintenance on the carts and mowers. Al enjoyed competing in truck pulling competitions, pulling with his Big Block Chevy “Thumper”. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and history. Al stayed busy tending to his small garden, tinkering on his tractors and feeding the hummingbirds. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife before she passed. Al was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who had a big heart and will be greatly missed by all. Left to cherish Al’s memory are his four children, Leslie (Matt) Thompson of Earlham; Douglas Farber of Earlham; Matthew (Sherri) Farber of Panora; Melissa (Michael) Lindsey of Earlham; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, LaRee Berry of Creston; Marilin Boyle of Missouri; Mary Giles of Greenfield; brother, Roger Farber of Creston; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; his father, Fred Conard; parents, Henry and Vivian Farber; special grandparents, Gus & Kay Greenbeck; a brother, Jon (Mary) Farber; and a grandson, Thomas Farber.
