Alice "Mae" Hulbert

Alice Mae Hulbert “Mae” passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Azria Health in Winterset, Iowa at age 93. Mae was born on April 25, 1927 in Williamson, Iowa to Leslie and Ellen (Anderson) Avitt. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa in 1945. She married Lester Hulbert and they raised four sons in St. Charles, Iowa. Mae assisted her husband, Lester in the operation of Hulbert’s Conoco and Hulbert’s Mobil. She also worked at Parrot Films, Solar Aircraft, Iowa Insurance Commission, Des Moines YMCA, Farm Bureau Insurance, Kerr-McGee Oil Co., Iowa Department of Agriculture, State Hygienic Laboratory, Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Madison County Department of Social Services, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Internal Revenue Service and the Veterans Administration. Mae started a fabric store (Alice Boutique Shoppe) on Main Street, St. Charles in September of 1971 and operated it until she closed the business in January of 1977. She served as a member of the Madison County Conservation Board from 1973-1976 and was appointed Chairman of the Covered Bridge Committee on January 3, 1977. She was instrumental in relocating the Imes Covered Bridge from Hanley on October 18, 1977 to its current location on the east end of St. Charles on Highway G50. She also assisted in field surveys of the St. Charles Cemetery to locate names on headstones and established maps for easier burial site locating. Mae was a member of the St. Charles Parish, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She had a passion for St. Charles history which led her to do extensive research and development of three volumes of St. Charles History. Mae loved to paint various Imes Covered Bridge scenes on Christmas tree bulbs which are hung annually on Christmas trees in many states across the US. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Ellen (Anderson) Avitt; husband, Lester; son, Jerry; brothers, Herbert and Frank Avitt; and sisters, Eloise Avitt and Irene Garlock. Mae is survived by children, Frank (Wanda), David (Marion), Georgia (daughter-in-law) and Roger (Carmen); 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the St. Charles Welcome Center or the St. Charles Parish.
