Anselmo Gomes

Anselmo Germanus Gomes, also known as Selmo, was born on November 3, 1925 in Georgetown, British Guyana to Rick and Zita Gomes. He passed away while resting peacefully at his home in Des Moines, Iowa on August 7, 2022. Anselmo is survived by his son, Michael Gerard Gomes, of New York, New York. Michael is an accomplished author and researcher. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna Theresa Pegus, also known as Ruth, who died on January 15, 2022; and by his brother Luciano, his only sibling, who passed away in 2008 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces and friends who will really miss his smile and love of life. Anselmo studied at St. Mary’s College in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad before beginning a very long and interesting career. He worked for the Correia Wine Company with operations in Trinidad and Guyana, for Massey Ferguson in Canada and the United States, several accounting and bookkeeping jobs, and Per-Mar Security. He retired from Per-Mar because of health problems at age 95. Anselmo was extremely devoted to his wife Anna and son Michael. He was very loyal and generous to his friends and family. He was also a long-time parishioner of St. Ambrose Cathedral, and had many friends there. He was active in the Life in the Spirit Community. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ambrose Cathedral or the MercyOne Des Moines Foundation. Services are currently pending.
