Anton "Jack" Schmidt

February 5, 1928 — July 15, 2022

Anton John "Jack" Schmidt, son of Anton Felix Schmidt and Jessia Maude (McKown) Schmidt, was born February 5, 1928 in Atlantic, Iowa. Jack graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1946. Jack enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served his country for two years before enrolling at the University of Iowa. He went on to get his bachelor's degree in business. At the University of Iowa he met Julia Dwan Mendenhall and the two were united in marriage on July 8, 1950. The couple was blessed with six children, Patricia Ann, Anton "Tony" John, Jean Marie, Angela Christine, David Francis and Julia Suzanne. Jack was a manager at the Register Tribune Agency in Perry, Salesman for State Farm Insurance, and other insurance agencies throughout his lifetime. He was a faithful member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Perry and enjoyed being involved with church activities. Jack liked traveling and was a huge fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially the football team. He passed away peacefully on July 15, 2022 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Maude Schmidt, wife Julia Dwan Schmidt, son Anton "Tony" John Schmidt, and half-sister Leona Berry. He is survived by his daughters Patricia Ann McKee (Marshall Hoyt) of Perry, Jean Marie Woods (Rick) of Independence, Angela Christine Schmidt (Linn) of Los Altos, California, and Julia Suzanne Schmidt (Bill Ireland) of Mountain Home, Idaho; son David Francis Schmidt (Kim) of Urbandale; daughter-in-law Gabe Schmidt; eleven grandchildren, Jason McKee (Kara), Shannon Morales (David), Laurel Langill (Kenneth), Richard "Dick" Woods (Sheila), Robin Woods, Becca Livingood (Brandon), Abe Woods (Annmarie), Kip Woods (Amanda), Andrew Fix-Schmidt, Rachel Schmidt, and Rebecca Schmidt; nine great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Perry. A Rosary Service was at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Father David Polich of Des Moines and Father Luis Mejia were the Celebrants. Lectors were Rachel Schmidt and Kimberly Fix-Schmidt. Gift Bearers were Andrew Fix-Schmidt and Rebecca Schmidt. Casket bearers were: Andrew Fix-Schmidt, Rachel Schmidt, Suzanne Schmidt, David Schmidt, Kimberly Fix-Schmidt, and Bill Ireland. Chuck Schott was the pianist and soloist. After the services at the church was a luncheon in the Hastings Funeral Home Lounge provided by the Regina Guild. Interment will take place 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2022 at Littleton Cemetery in Independence, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please make memorial contributions to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Perry, IA and may also be sent to Hastings Funeral Home- P.O. Box #204 - Perry, IA 50220 to be given to the family.
