Atis Lubavs, age 77, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Atis was born on August 2, 1943 in Limbazi, Latvia to Arnold and Alise Lubavs. He legally immigrated to the United States and settled in Monticello, Iowa. He proudly and courageously served his country when he enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1963. He was honorably discharged as a Sargent E-5 in 1967. Atis was a true American patriot. He spent a majority of his life working in construction. He was a meticulous contractor who took great pride in his craftsmanship. Atis was admired by other sub-contractors for building the straightest walls they had ever seen. Atis enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. For him it was never about the catch, kill or game, but instead about the camaraderie and quality time with his buddies. He loved listening to country music and would never hesitate to wail along like he was part of the band. Atis also enjoyed having pizza parties with friends where he would make homemade special-order pizzas for all. Atis was a foodie at heart who took pleasure in the finer cuisines in life and enjoyed regularly dining out with family and friends. Atis had a big heart and would go out of his way to help others. He was kind to everyone he met and never met a stranger he didn’t know. His boisterous laugh was contagious and he was always ready with a joke or a playful comment. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Atis was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Andy, and nephew, J.R. He will be missed and forever remembered by his wife Jeanne, daughter Bridget, son-in-law Jake, grandson Bennett, as well as his many family and friends. Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Dowling Catholic High School or the Wounded Warrior Project.
