Benny Reed Scroggins

January 1, 1947 — October 17, 2022

Benny "Ben" Reed Scroggins, of Guthrie Center, Iowa passed away peacefully on October 17, 2022, from complications of pneumonia at The New Homestead Care Center, Guthrie Center, IA. Benny was born in Norwood, MO to Morris and Evelynn (Millard) Scroggins on January 1, 1947, the second of three children. Ben had many careers throughout his working years. After his high school graduation, from Sunnydale Adventist Academy in 1965, he attended trade school to become a draftsman. To support his family, he also worked as an electrical inspector for nuclear power plants all around the country. He retired as a truck driver from Olson Trucking, Inc. in Sturgeon, MO in 2011. Ben was active in his younger years and loved playing pretty much any kind of sport. On weekends, with his young family in tow to cheer him on, you could find him playing flag football, softball, racquetball, or volleyball. He was competitive but always fair when it came to rules of the games. After his retirement, he pursued his interest in guns by spending some of his free time at the shooting range. Ben always had a soft spot for animals and was never seen without his furry puppy companions. He made it a rule to adopt his dogs from a local shelter rather than from a breeder. Ben was always up for a trip to Pizza Hut to enjoy one of his favorite meals of veggie lover's pan pizza and Dr. Pepper! Ben lived many places over the years, including Michigan, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri and most recently, The New Homestead Care Center in Guthrie Center, Iowa. He enjoyed life at the care center where he could socialize. Men's coffee time was a highlight of his week. Ben was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church all his life. He believed in the gift of salvation and clung to the promises of forgiveness and eternal life through Jesus Christ. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; sister Margie (Scroggins) Dunn and brother-in-law Gene Dunn; brother-in-law, David Littrell. He is survived by his three children: son, Todd (Lee) Scroggins, of Guthrie Center, Iowa; daughter, Tamara Scroggins of Nantucket, Massachusetts; son, Paul (Zuri) Scroggins of Kannapolis, North Carolina; eight grandchildren: Anthony (Jordan) Scroggins, Madison (Chris) Crawford, Logan Scroggins, Allie, Hunter and Abbie Tierney, Luke and Eli Scroggins; four great-grandchildren: Easton and Eden Scroggins, Analee Crawford and Swayze Smith; sister Nancy Littrell-Wagoner of Norwood, MO; numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved very much. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to: all the staff of The New Homestead Care Center, we appreciate the love and care you showed our dad while he was living at the care center; Dr. Bascom and Dr. Ahrens, the Guthrie County Hospital and Hospice of Central Iowa for the attentiveness and concern they showed our dad during the last year, and especially the last few weeks of his life. We would also like to thank the Hastings Funeral Home in Perry, Iowa for the tenderness shown to our family during the loss of our dad. We are forever humbled. Ben will be laid to rest at the Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center, Iowa. No services are planned at this time. Events Details are pending.
