Bertha Kleis, 99, of Bethany, Missouri, died Monday, July 23, 2021 in Bethany. A visitation will be held 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., Friday, August 6, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel, where family will greet friends. A graveside service will be held at the St. Charles Cemetery, rural Madison County at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation. Bertha Mae Daywalt was born in Annapolis, Maryland on January 2, 1922, the daughter of Charles and Caroline (Sands) Daywalt. She married Arthur Frank Kleis on June 16, 1942 at Annapolis. Bertha had first lived in Annapolis, and then San Diego, California for 32 years. She moved to Iowa in 1982, and lived in Clio for 12 years before moving to St. Charles in 1994. She enjoyed embroidery with tubes of paint. She loved watching her soap operas, playing Parcheesi, putting together puzzles, and most of all spending time with all of her grandchildren. Bertha is survived by her children, Victor Kleis, Bonnie Kuhns, and Pamela (Douglas) Jones; daughter-in-law, Karen Kleis; brother, Russell Daywalt; sisters, Mary Bossert, Dolores Dunmire; and 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and many great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Caroline Daywalt; husband, Arthur Kleis; son, Arthur Kleis, Jr.; daughter, Sandra O’Neall; brothers, Robert Daywalt, Dick Daywalt, Alfred Daywalt, and Pete Daywalt; sisters, Virginia Chase and Roselle Stelljes; and great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Kuhns.
