Betty Mckinney

Betty McKinney died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola. She was 87. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, July 2nd at Ochiltree Funeral Service where a visitation will be held two hours prior, beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Iowa Chapter (1730 28th Street, West Des Moines, IA 50266, Phone 515.440.2722). Betty Ilean De Bok was born May 5, 1925 in Winterset, the daughter of Alfred and Dorothy (Clopton) De Bok. She graduated from Winterset High School and later married Paul McKinney on September 27, 1945 in Iowa City, Iowa. He preceded her in death in October of 2009. She worked for Doctors Chestnut and Evans for 20 years and also worked 20 years for the Winterset Care Center North as an activity coordinator. Betty enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing cards. She also loved putting together puzzles and sewing; having made hundreds of lap quilts for residents at the care center. She was a devoted wife and mother but her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She always made them feel special; whether she was getting on the floor to play with them or taking them on picnics. Betty is survived by her children, Janet Mundell (Ismael Nunez Gonzalez) of Des Moines; Richard (Julie) McKinney of Winterset; Sandy Peterson of Des Moines; three sisters, Viola Mapes of Slater; Elizabeth (Ralph) Jordon of Adel, and Janice (Pat) Flannery of Indianola, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son-in-law, Pete Peterson and an infant brother, Eugene De Bok.
