Bill Honnold 'Coach' - Winterset

Verle Winton Honnold (Bill), 80, of Winterset died April 2, 2013 at St. Lukes Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 13, at the First Christian Church in Winterset. Visitation will be Friday from noon to 8 PM at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 PM. Burial will be in the Lorimor Cemetery at Lorimor, Iowa. Bill Honnold was born June 30, 1932 at Battle Creek, Iowa to Vern and Vera Honnold. Bill was one of six children. He graduated from Winterset High School. He lettered all four years and was state champion in the _ mile. Bill married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Delene Thompson, at the First Christian Church on September 14, 1952. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served four years. They began their family of six children in Tennessee. After being honorably discharged they moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa. Bill attended the University of Northern Iowa and received his teaching degree. He taught science at Winterset Junior High School for most of his teaching career. Bill coached girls basketball and boys track. He was fondly known as "COACH". He was a unconventional teacher that did everything outside of the box. He had a passion for teaching and was a wonderful teacher. Bill was voted teacher of the year and received a reward. He retired from teaching after 32 years. He enjoyed reading, farming, woodworking, fishing, and church. He loved spending time with his family. Throughout his life he was a devout follower of Jesus Christ. He was a wonderful prayer warrior and will be missed by many. He had a heart for everyone to come to Jesus. He was proceeded in death by his parents; wife Delene, sisters, Fyrne (Wayne) Davis and June (Gordon) Thorn; brother-in-law, Homer Weeks; and granddaughters, Sara Nelson and Dawn Nelson. Those left to cherish his memory are sons, Bill (Lisa) Honnold of Winterset, Shawn (Neena) Honnold of Winterset, Jeremy (Tina) Honnold of Des Moines, Dan (Jenny) Honnold of Des Moines; daughters, Christy (Steve) of Maumee, Ohio, Cindy (Jim) Smith of Lexington, Kentucky; brother, Duane (Edna) Honnold of Winterset; sisters, Gloria Weeks of Tomball, Texas and Jackie (Phil) Anderson of Bismark, ND; seventeen grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
