Bob Lathrum, 88, of Winterset passed away on October 20, 2015 in Winterset, Iowa. A visitation with family present will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 24, 2015, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare, Winterset. Burial will be at a later date in the St. Charles Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family. Robert Eugene Lathrum, son of Glen and Carrie (Picken) Lathrum, was born on the family farm in rural St. Charles, Iowa on November 26, 1926. While growing up, he worked on the farm and was involved in 4-H and showing cattle. He also played basketball and baseball. His sister Delores recalls many happy memories growing up including the pony and cart and sledding on the toboggan that their dad made. After graduating from St. Charles high school, Bob continued to farm and in 1945, enlisted in the Air Force. After being discharged from the service, he married Cora Farren on November 26, 1947. To this union was born one daughter, Carole. Bob worked for the United States Postal Service for many years and his jobs included the Postmaster in St. Charles and a rural mail carrier in the St. Charles and Truro areas. He farmed part time for many years and loved gardening and working with livestock including horses, cattle and dogs. He loved all things farming! He also looked forward to the annual fall pheasant hunt with his dad, brother-in-law and nephews. On April 30, 2008, Bob married Carole Huglin in Corning, Iowa. They resided west of Winterset and loved going to auctions together. His beagle Barron was always by his side. Bob was recently awarded a certificate of appreciation for his service in the Air Force. He was born in Madison County and other than a short time in Greenfield, he lived there his whole life. He is survived by his wife, Carole Lathrum of Winterset; daughter, Carole Weltha of Des Moines; step-children, Susan (Randy) Rosander, Rick (Sandy) Bice, Cindy (Harlan) Wetzel; two grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; many step great grandchildren; sister, Delores Van Dike of Ankeny; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Carrie Lathrum; first wife, Cora; infant brother, Duane; and stepson, David Bice.
