Burton was born December 10, 1924 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Emmanuel and Beth (Carpenter) Haglan. He grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa and after high school served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942 until 1946. During this time he served on the USS Gherardi and USS Barr. Following his military service Burton attended Creighton University where he received a BS in Chemistry. He received a teaching certificate from Buena Vista College and later obtained a Master of Science from the University of Mississippi at Oxford. His marriage to Evelyn Mae England took place on August 19, 1948 and she preceded him in death on December 28, 1967. He is survived by 2 children, Barry Haglan of Des Moines; Colleen Haglan-Lynch and husband James Lynch of Prole; his friend and companion, Phyllis Kingsbury of Des Moines; 6 grandchildren, Jann, Kary and Neil Haglan; Wyeth, Mary Kenna and Marshall Lynch and 1 great granddaughter, Alexis Rose Haglan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his spouse, three siblings, Mary Rohrer, Adeline Brown and Howard Haglan and a granddaughter, Kenna Haglan. During his early working career he was employed by the Iowa State Department of Health and the City of Cedar Rapids as a milk sanitarian. He taught high school science and chemistry at Burnside, Iowa in Central Webster Community School District and from 1964-1986 he was an instructor of biology and botany at Drake University in Des Moines. He retired from teaching in 1986. He was a member of the Hawkeye Knife Club, the American Society of Military Insignia Collectors, the National Fishing Lure Collectors and the Tin Can Sailors. He enjoyed bird-watching, fishing and gardening. Visitation: Riverside Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa.
