C. Raymond Spurgin

May 20, 1913 — February 26, 2006

Raymond was born May 20, 1913 in Lincoln Township, Madison County, Iowa, the son of Charles Ellsworth and Georgia (Kensler) Spurgin. On November 5, 1939 he was united in marriage to Della Mae Leinard at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Raymond died Sunday, February 26, 2006, at the Winterset Care Center South at the age of 92. In their early married life, Raymond did custom butchering at Cherokee with his father and later for the Winterset Locker Plant. Raymond along with Della Mae farmed in Madison, Warren and Polk Counties. Raymond was always interested in good livestock and raised black cattle, corriedale sheep and Alpine dairy goats. He also bred and trained registered Pinto and Painted horses and ponies for driving and riding. Raymond and Della Mae have lived in Winterset since 1992 and prior to this time lived in Mitchellville for 25 years. Raymond is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winterset. Prior to moving to Winterset, Raymond was a member of the Mitchellville Methodist Church where he was a lay leader, Chairman of the Church Board, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Choir. He was also a member of the Heartland Singers and traveled on 12 Lay Witness Missions in Iowa and Kansas. He was a member of several Bible Study Groups in Mitchellville, Des Moines, and Winterset. He was a member of the Welch Pony Society as well as the State and National Pinto and Painted Horse Association. Visitation: 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., where family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Memorial: He is survived by his wife, Della Mae Spurgin of Winterset, three sisters, Mary Clague of Winterset; Betty Ballantyne of Hesperia, CA; Barbara Holmes of Des Moines and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Warren Spurgin; and 2 sisters, Lorraine Spurgin and Henrietta McKirgan. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church and Friends of the Winterset Public Library.
