Carl Neal, 87, of Des Moines, died July 9, 2015 at the Calvin Community in Des Moines. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where family will be present at this time to receive friends. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 29, at 10:00 a.m., at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with burial to follow at the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Calvin Community of Des Moines and condolences may be left for the family online at ochiltree.com. Carl Junior Neal, son of Carl and Ruth (Cassel) Neal, was born November 12, 1927 in Manchester, Iowa. He attended the Manchester Schools and served in the Navy before coming back and graduating from Manchester High School in 1947. Carl was united in marriage with Elizabeth Corkrean in August of 1949 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. Ten children were born to this union. Carl was a fireman at the Des Moines Fire Department for 25 years. He was a member of the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines and a past member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. Carl enjoyed gardening, cooking, and baking his famous pies. He was a talented handyman who helped renovate his children’s homes and countless other projects. Carl loved to travel all over America. Above all else, Carl cherished the time he was able to spend with family. He is survived by six children: Cecilia (Reg) Gass of Des Moines; Pat (Judy) Neal of Des Moines; Mary (Wayne) Halvorsen of Cave Junction, OR; Brian (Patty) Neal of Urbandale; Kevin (Julie) Neal of Jefferson; Fr. Mark Neal of Des Moines; 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elizabeth; children: Theresa Owens; Dennis Neal; Thomas Neal; James Daniel Neal in infancy; brothers: Wesley Neal; Lyle Neal; Douglas Neal; and sister Barbara Cobb.
