Carl Sawyers

December 29, 1912 — November 7, 2006

Carl Sawyers was born December 29, 1912 in Webster Township, Madison County; the son of Andrew and May (Pope) Sawyers. His marriage to Dorothea Norris took place on December 12, 1950. She preceded him in death in 1974. As a young man, Carl served in the United States Army during WWII. He is survived by his daughter Cindy Winslow and husband, Rob of New Virginia; his son, Steve Sawyers and wife, Amy of Winterset; and five grandchildren, Jack, Bryan, and Nick Sawyers and Sarah and Shane Winslow. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothea; a daughter, Susan; and two brothers, Claire and Raymond Sawyers. Carl was a farmer most of his life. For a time, he stripped blue grass for seed across the Midwest in the 1950’s. He also did work as a construction laborer. Carl was a member of the Church of Christ of Winterset. Carl died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at the Winterset Care Center South in Winterset. He was 93. Burial: Winterset Cemetery, where military honors will be preformed by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 8142 & American Legion Post 184 both of Winterset. Visitation: 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., where family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., November 9, 2006 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Service: 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 10, 2006 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, Iowa Memorial: Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice of Winterset.
