Carol Ann Newberry Hackney, 86, of Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center, formerly of Adel, Grinnell, Newton, and Conway, AR, got her wings to fly on August 26, 2022, after a long and valiant battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Carol was born August 7, 1936, at home in Faulkner County Arkansas to Forun and Lois Powell Newberry. She was the oldest of three girls. Her father passed when she was only eight, so she helped to raise her sisters while her mother worked in the cotton fields to make ends meet. They later moved into town to Conway, AR where her mother met and married Zane Lovidee Strickland and a brother was born to their family. The family moved north to Newton, Iowa in her early teens. Carol is a graduate of Newton High School.
Carol married Keith Hackney and to this union three children were born, the oldest a girl and two younger boys. She spent many years raising the children and then, when they were older, went to work outside the home. She had many different jobs (dime store clerk, meat department, jewelry store clerk, dry cleaner clerk, grocery store clerk, and working at the school lunch program) but her favorite was being with her kids. There were seven grandchildren for her to spoil and love on. Those seven grandchildren have now grown and have given her nine great grandchildren to be enormously proud of!
Throughout the years, she kept herself entertained by playing cards, games, and bowling. She was a particularly good bowler and had many years at State Tournaments. She liked to go listen to Blue Grass music and enjoyed several years of going back to the “OLDIES” at the Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake, IA. Along the way, she also enjoyed camping, from tent to camper, and years of boating. She liked to cross stitch and crochet while watching her favorite TV programs. She also liked to travel and enjoyed a few winters in Hawaii, but she always liked to come back to home base too! She was a great cook and holidays were always filled with lots of good food!!! She liked a clean house, and the joke was you could eat off her floors!
Left to share her loving legacy are her daughter, Barb (Dick) Wicks of Adel, IA, sons Doug (Stephanie) Hackney of Georgetown, TX and Jeff (Michele) Hackney of Temple, TX; grandchildren Matthew Wicks of Urbandale, IA, Melissa (Sean) Doyle of Dexter, IA, Adam (Carrie) Hackney of Morristown, MN, Amber Holeman-Richardson of St Paul, MN, Vance (Alex) Hackney of Georgetown, TX, Chari Verespej of CA and Shaun Verespej of TX; great grandchildren Madison Wicks, Faith and Blakley Doyle, Madalynn, Hanna, and Tyler Hackney, Nakeya Richardson, Julia and Troy Holeman; and sisters Brenda Damman, Wanda (Dick) Lammey, brother Rick (Marsha) Strickland; sister-in-law Linda (Doug) Larson and 11 nieces and nephews.
Those that flew on ahead of her were her parents, Forun Newberry and Lois Powell Newberry Strickland, and stepfather, Zane Strickland.
The family cannot find enough words to thank the staff at Spurgeon Manor, Dallas Center and Suncrest Hospice for the vigilant and selfless acts of love that they extended to our mother, Grandma, and Granny so that she could live her final years in Christian love.
Her celebration of life with a visitation will be at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel, IA at 4-6 PM Friday, September 2, 2022. Funeral services will be at Faith Lutheran Church, Adel, IA at 10AM Saturday, September 3, 2022. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel, IA.
