Carolyn L. Farr

Carolyn Farr, 86, of Winterset, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 19, 2021, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset with Rev. Randal Lubbers officiating. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.caldwellparrishcom. Carolyn LaVerne Carper was born on August 25, 1934 in Osceola, Iowa, the daughter of Willard and Lilah Moomey Carper. Her father was a road construction superintendent and the family moved about the United States during her early years. As a result of her father’s work, she was in nine different schools in one nine-month period. She was introduced to many differing lifestyles throughout her youth which explains her ease of communication. Carolyn was a 1952 graduate of Osceola High School, excelling in softball, track and basketball. She attended Methodist School of Nursing with an RN license as her goal. Shortly after beginning her studies, she met Richard “Bud” Farr, and a new goal came into view; being a wife. Upon Bud’s release from the US Navy, they married on July 4, 1953 in Murray, Iowa. Following Bud’s graduation from barber school, they settled in Winterset. Two sons were born to Carolyn and Bud; Jeffrey Lee and Jerry Jay. Each son brought their friends into the Farr Family and from their teen years to retirement Carolyn was known to this extended family as “Maudie”. After thirty years of marriage, Bud passed away on May 15, 1983. In 1986, Richard “Rich” Wilson came into Carolyn’s life. They married on August 9, 1986. During their twenty-one years of marriage, they enjoyed golf, family life, wintering in Arizona and attending as many Hawkeye home football games and bowl games as possible. Rich passed away on December 31, 2007. Carolyn enjoyed many hobbies; golf, sewing, crocheting, reading, playing piano, genealogy, and at the top of the list was playing bridge with her friends. She was a willing volunteer for the American Cancer Society and VFW as well as many other organizations. She so enjoyed her career life that she retired twice; first from FS Services after thirty-two years of employment and second, from The John Wayne Museum Gift Shop after nearly twenty years of service. The Gift Shop was re-named in her honor at the time of her retirement. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud Farr; sons, Jeff and Jerry Farr; husband, Richard Wilson; brothers, Robert, Darrell, Eldon and Leland Carper; sisters-in-law, Patty Carper, Loretta Carper, June Farr (John) Twohig, Jeanne Farr (Robert) Davenport, Dawn (Hap) Whingter and Carolyn (Bill) Jameson; brothers-in-law, Arnie (Verla) Wilson and Marv (Marabelle) Wilson. Carolyn is survived by her daughter-in-law, Patty Farr of Winterset; grandchildren, Cody Farr of Urbandale, Lauren Farr and Hunter Farr of Winterset, brother, Bill Carper and wife, Norma of Murray, sisters-in-law, Jeanette Carper of Johnston, Connie Carper of Minnesota, Janice Farr Halls of Weldon; step-children, Kay Stokes of Iowa City, Tom Wilson of Arlington, TX, Mary Michel of Iowa City, Jim Wilson of New Port Beach, CA, Michael Wilson and wife, Wendy of Chillicothe, MO; step-grandchildren, Trisha Stokes and Mark Michel of Iowa City, Amy, Tim, and Ross Wilson of Arlington, TX, Wade and Amanda Judy of Chillicothe, MO; step-great grandchildren, Dylan Stokes and Miley Stokes of Iowa City; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the John Wayne Museum Event Fund. Carolyn’s family would like to thank the Suncrest Hospice Staff for the compassionate care given to Carolyn.
