Charles Austin Wachter

Charles Austin Wachter, 87, of Winterset, Iowa was born on February 2, 1929 in Des Moines Iowa. He passed away at the Madison County Memorial Hospital on June 14, 2016. He was the 10th child of Francis “Frank” Paul Wachter and Anna Mary Heller Wachter. Early in life, Charles worked for Ferrari Gardens and the US Post Office. After graduating from Dowling High School in Des Moines, he worked for Bell Telephone as a lineman and repairman. He and Mary were the parents of five children: Charles, Kathy, Mike, David and Jeff. In 1973 the family moved to Winterset. Charles took early retirement to take care of his wife, Sue. He enjoyed his garden, hunting, his family and friends. Charles is survived by his special friend Rosemary Osmun; children and their spouses, Charles, Kathy, David, Jeff, and Kurt; several grandchildren and great grandcildren; and the mother of his children, Mary Spohn. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mike; wife, Sue; and his siblings Blanche, Esther, Grace, Ruth, Pauline, Joe, Margaret, Martha and Francis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Dan Kirby officiating. Family will greet friends 1 hour prior to service time on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
