Charles W. Adams - Adel

Charles W. Adams passed away peacefully March 30, 2014 at the UnityPoint Hospital in Des Moines. Charlie was born November 5, 1936 in Des Moines to Willard and Allegra Adams. After graduating from high school in Des Moines, Charlie earned a BA from UNI, received a Master of Library Science from the University of Denver, and completed a supervisor program at Arizona State University. Charlie spent over forty years working in the public school library field, as a building level librarian, an instructor of library science at UNI, and Director of Media Service for the Marshalltown School District, the Phoenix Union High School District in Arizona and the Union County ESD in LaGrande, Oregon. Charlie's last years of teaching were with the Ysleta ISD in El Paso, Texas. Charlie was a pioneer in the use of instructional television. In 1978 he was invited to the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee to provide input for the off-air video taping law. When they retired Charlie and his wife of 38 years, Sharon, returned to Iowa and settled in Adel. In retirement, Charlie enjoyed golfing, religious studies, cheering on the Hawkeyes and his grandchildren's activities. In addition to his wife, Charlie is survived by his son Richard and his stepchildren: Tam (Bill) Bartlett, Lynne (Mike) Henson and Chris McTurk; his grandchildren: Zeb Adams, Brandon (Nancy) Cecil, Tara (Bobby) Avina, Michael (Crystal) Henson, Holly (Donald) Franklin and Megan Bartlett. His great-grandchildren are: Kinsey, Sofia, Hayden, Hunter, Michael, Gracie-Lynn and foster great-granddaughter Coco. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Walnut Hills United Methodist Church in Urbandale. Burial will be 2:00 PM Friday at the Alice Union Cemetery near Conrad, Iowa. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Dallas County EMS or Walnut Hills United Methodist Church.
