Clarence ‘Shorty’ Lucas was born September 12, 1923. He was the youngest son born to the late Clarence George Lucas, Sr., and Wilda Jewel Kale Lucas. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1941 and his marriage to Bellezora Cooper took place on February 17, 1942 in Missouri. Clarence farmed east of Winterset near the Holliwell Bridge. While farming he truly enjoyed working with his livestock, especially cattle. He was an avid outdoors man, and took many hunting and fishing trips with his friends and family. At one time Clarence collected Winchester Guns and antiques. Clarence and Bellezora traveled extensively throughout the world. He was a member and served on the boards of the Winterset United Methodist Church and the Madison County Historical Society. Clarence was a strong family man and especially enjoyed the time spent with his daughters and their families. On Saturday evening, October 16, 2010, Clarence, 87, died peacefully with his daughters at his side. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Bellezora; his oldest daughter, Karen Woods; and two brothers, John and Kale. Clarence is survived by three loving daughters, Dianna Jencks of North Canton, OH; Kristin Hibbs and her husband, Dale of Iowa City; Marsha Freed of Winterset; a son-in-law, Bruce Woods of Des Moines; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 20th at United Methodist Church in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 19th at Ochiltree Funeral Service where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Madison County Historical Society.
