Dale Carter

Dale Carter, 76, of Des Moines, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2024 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. 

Dale Allen Carter was born April 9, 1948 in Dexter, Iowa to Wilbur and Margy (Travis) Carter. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1966 and received his BA from Northwest Missouri State University in 1970. 

Dale was raised as a true farm boy - although farming itself wasn’t his calling. He attended college for a teaching degree, briefly student taught, then began his career with the Iowa Department of Human Services in 1971. Starting as a Social Worker, he advanced to an Area Administrator for Madison and Warren Counties. With a reorganization within the system in 2002, he started working at DHS Regional Office in Des Moines. There were countless people that he crossed paths with, and many continue to be close friends yet today.

Dale was extremely involved in genealogy and traveled to many ancestral locations in Illinois and Iowa, as well as countless hours on the computer/internet. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and riding his recumbent bike – including taking it to Arizona to ride in the sunshine. He hated winters in Iowa and truly wanted to winter in warmer climates!

Family was important to him. He and his wife, Linda, were married in 1997 and his two sons welcomed her to the family as well as a granddaughter. Over the years, the family continued to grow.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sharilynn Algreen and brother, Gary Carter.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Smith) Carter of Des Moines; sons, Chad (Stacie) Carter of Winterset and Jason (Michelle) Carter of Dexter; grandchildren, Madi, Cade (Kenzi), Cael (Brianna), Miranda, and Marli; step grandchildren, Colt (Sarah), Cazlynn (Jacy), Josie (Chase), and Jaxon (Ava); step great grandchildren, Isabella, Walker, and Nevaeh; siblings, Ron (Karen) Carter, Randy (Lynn) Carter; brother-in-law, Ron Algreen; and sister-in-law, Jolene Caldon.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 4, 2025 at the Dexter Cemetery in Dexter, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the family for a future designation.
