Dale F. Wicks, 97, passed away July 17, 2016 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren near Adel with burial at Church of the Brethren Cemetery at Panther Creek. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday July 20 at McCalley Funeral Home where family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Dale was born August 2, 1918 to Clarence and Effie (Poffenberger) Wicks in Colfax Township in rural Adel, Iowa. He attended country school for grades 1-8. His freshman year he went to Adel High School, and the next 3 years to Redfield High School. He took classes during the winter quarter at Iowa State College. On May 31, 1940 Dale married Ruth Garrett at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren. He served as herdsman for Goode Dairy Farm in West Des Moines for four years before moving to a farm in rural Adel. They lived there until October of 2014 when they moved to the Madrid Home. In 1946 Dale served as a sea going cowboy caring for livestock on ship that were to be given to impoverished Europeans after World War II. He served many years on the board of the Panther Creek Church, and was a deacon for 43 years. He taught Sunday School for many years, was active in the Men’s Fellowship, and served as church treasurer for six years. Dale was on the Northern Plains District Board for the Church of the Brethren for many years, and served as coordinator for the district Adventure in Mission program from 1985-1989. Dale helped found the district Agri-Urban program and served on its board for many years. He was a delegate to the Church of the Brethren District and Annual Conferences many times. Dale served on the Dallas County Farm Bureau Board for many years, and was a voting delegate and campaign manager. In 1978 he was the rural recipient of the Adel Community Service Award. Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, sisters Viola (Earnest) Mleynek and Vera (Burt) Garrett, twin brother Delbert Wicks, half sister Velma (Harold) Garrett, half brother Donald Wicks, and son Paul (LaVeda) Wicks of Kansas City, MO. He is survived by his children John (Maureen) Wicks of Des Moines, Janet Russell of Sapulpa, OK, Roy (Marlene) Wicks of Woodward, Peter (Brenda) Wicks of Adel, Alan (Roxanne) Wicks of Minburn, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be directed to Panther Creek Church of the Brethren or Heifer Project. Online condolences may be left at on this site.
