Dareld Martin Albright

Dareld Martin Albright, son of Oscar and Lula Albright, was born March 25, 1923 in Coon Rapids, Iowa and died August 21, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 90 years 4 months and 28 days. Funeral services for Dareld were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2013 First United Methodist Church, Perry, Iowa. Visitation was from 2:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. Pastor Enna Antunez & Pastor Paul Burrow of the First United Methodist Church provided words of comfort. His daughter Susan provided an in depth biography. His casket bearers were Duke Major, Hap Newell, Michael Kelly, Doug Reberis, Bobby Jones, Bob Peterson, and Denny Glass. The pianist was Elta Summerson and she played On Eagle's Wings and How Great Thou Art. The church ushers were Gene Dorman and Paul Miller. Military honors were provided by the Iowa Army National Guard Funeral Honors, VFW Post 2060 & American Legion Post #85 of Perry & Post #663 of Urbandale. His casket was escorted to the cemetery by the Legion Riders of Urbandale with burial at Junction Township Cemetery, Grand Junction, Iowa. Dareld graduated from high school in Jefferson, Iowa. He served honorably in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division during World War II. He was wounded in action on December 22, 1944 near Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Purple Heart. On March 30, 1947 he was united in marriage to Edna Houston at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were parents of one daughter Susan. The family made their home in various places, but most of their married lives were spent in Boone, Iowa. In 1995 Dareld and Edna moved to Perry, and due to Edna's health requirements, moved to Des Moines in 2003. Dareld worked in a number of places, but ended his working life at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. He loved horses, raised, trained and showed them until his health required him to give up his life-long passion. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan with season tickets until he and Edna felt they were no longer able to make the trips and sit in the inclement conditions. Dareld and Edna enjoyed travelling, especially their trips to Branson, Missouri. One of his travelling highlights was a trip to Kentucky and visiting the great racehorse Secretariat. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Perry, and was a former member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Dareld was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 61 years, Edna; sisters: Mildred Clark, Marvel Enslow, Greta Kunkle, Lois Hostetler, Vera Stone and Margaret (in childhood); brothers: Kenneth Albright and Ronald Albright. He is survived by his daughter Susan Albright of Urbandale; brother Clifford Albright of Guthrie Center; brother-in-law Willard Hostetler and his wife Janette of Jefferson; friends who are like daughters: Chris McMurray, Mary Beth Gross and Donna Burgess all of Urbandale; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
