Darlene I. Thompson, 96, formerly of Redfield, IA passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 in her apartment at The Waterford at Hidden Lake, Canton, GA. She was born to the late William Clay Wine and Della Ida Raner Wine on October 9, 1922 in Guthrie County, Iowa. Darlene was raised in the rural coal mining area of the Fansler community in Guthrie County. After graduating high school Darlene taught country school for a short time before receiving nurses training at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. Darlene then worked at the Dexter Clinic Hospital off and on until the Clinic permanently closed. Darlene married Charles J. Thompson March 1, 1947. To this union three sons were born Tommy, Steven, and Tony. Darlene was a loving mother, wife, homemaker, nurse, and remarkable cook. She enjoyed all kinds of art and had an exceptional eye for seeing what could be created from several small pieces when put together to create a picture, wall hanging, or quilt. Darlene loved to sew and she inspired many to start quilting over the years. She enjoyed reading her large selection of magazines and books that would have been the envy of any library. Darlene was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Charles J. Thompson, her son Tony R. Thompson, granddaughter Angela A. Thompson McClemons. Darlene was also preceded in death by her two brothers Ernest Wine and Seth Wine. Survivors include her sons Tommy (Debbie) of Georgia, Steven (Rosanda) of Georgia, and grandchildren Brian Thompson (Amanda), Tracy Ashby (Brandon), Brenda Twilley (Taylor), and Paula Tucker (Kyle). She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 11 AM at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel, 735 S. 14th, Adel, IA 50003. After the service and luncheon Darlene’s cremains will be interred at the Dexter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Redfield Fire Dept. and EMS, PO Box 127, Redfield IA 50233.
