Darlene (Dot) Thornburg was born on November 30, 1923 in Jamaica, Iowa to Lloyd Nicholson and Madge Bayne Nicholson and died January 8, 2009 at the Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care in Jefferson, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 7 days. Funeral service were held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2009 Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson, Iowa, with burial in Franklin Township Cemetery, Cooper, Iowa. Words of comfort were provided by Rev. Dr. William Daylong and Rev. Sheri Daylong of the United Methodist Church, Jefferson and Pastor Robert Mc Knight of the First Baptist Church, Jefferson, Iowa. Her honorary casket bearers were Bart Blackburn, Everett Mull, Eugene Garrity, Don Wilcox and Eddie Davis, casket bearers were Bret Blackburn, Lori Bishop, Steve Bishop, Rick Jennings Tim Bishop and Ritchie Thornburg music was provided by Marilyn Hoskinson at the organ with Larry Dowd singing, Amazing Grace, The Lord's Prayer and Going Down The Valley. Dot, as she was known to most people, grew up in Jamaica and graduated from the Jamaica High School in 1942. She married Keith Thornburg on February 20, 1943 at the United Methodist Church in Jefferson. They were the parents of Gary, Vicki and Debbie. They lived on a farm near Cooper and moved to Jefferson in 1975. Dot was a secretary at Cooper School, worked at Schoppe's, Anthony's, Pamida, the Redwood Restaurant and Schaal's Truck Stop. Dot enjoyed dancing, playing Bingo and being a member of the bridge club, painting and playing cards. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Jefferson. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Gary on December 13, 1987; granddaughter, Wendy Jennings on May 1, 2007; brother, Claire Nicholson, and sister, Sis Benson. Dot is survived by her husband, Keith of Jefferson; daughters, Vicki Bishop (Larry Newton) and Debbie Blackburn (Nick) all of Jefferson; grandchildren, Steve Bishop (Judy), Tim Bishop (Toby), Bret Blackburn (Laura), Bart Blackburn, Lori Bishop (Mike Webb) and Ritchie Thornburg (Renee); 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Jack Nicholson (Helen) of West Des Moines; and sister-in-law, Helen Kendall of Jefferson; other relatives and many friends.
