July 16, 1931 — May 15, 2013

Darrell Eivins, 81, of Lorimor died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the Winterset Care Center South. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 18 at the Macksburg United Methodist Church, with burial in the Moon Cemetery, near Macksburg. A visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 17 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare; where family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family. Darrell Dean Eivins was born July 16, 1931; the second son of Orlie and Zelma (Steele) Eivins. He grew up on a farm north of Macksburg and graduated from Macksburg School in 1949 where he had been active in basketball and baseball. (He was catcher on the Macksburg team in 1949 that went to the state tournament.) He attended Simpson College, Drake University and Iowa State University prior to his enlistment in the US Air Force in 1950. Darrell was honorably discharged in 1954 as a staff sergeant and after his discharge, he farmed for the rest of his life as long as he was able. In 1955, he married Ida Rachael Guessford at the Kellogg Christian Church, Kellogg, Iowa and to this union there were five children, Marlin, Garnet, Alan, Karen, and Nona. He was a member of the Lorimor Christian Church where he served as an elder and deacon. He later returned to the Macksburg United Methodist Church; the church of his youth where he attended regularly until his illness in 2005. Darrell enjoyed Western movies and T.V. programs. He loved to watch baseball; all teams were his favorite—Royals, Cardinals, Cubs, and the Twins especially. He was a proud and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He liked to share his candy of peanut clusters and lemon drops with the grandchildren. He loved to tell jokes but could never tell the punch line because he would laugh too much. Darrell is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ida of Lorimor; a son, Alan Eivins of Lorimor; three daughters, Garnet Johnson of Windsor Heights; Karen Kalasinsky (Tom) of Winterset; Nona Eivins (Michael Pohle) of West Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Eivins of Macksburg; 4 grandchildren, Taralyn Johnson (Noah Iseton), Trevor Johnson, Michelle West (Travis), and Michael Eivins; 2 great-grandchildren, Sid and Suri Johnson; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Marlin Eivins; and a brother Edwin Eivins.
