Darrell R. Bruett of Winterset, died Monday, May 31, 2010 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 66. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 2 in the McDonald-Chase Cemetery, Douglas Township, Madison Co. Memorials may be directed to the family. Darrell Ray Bruett was born April 27, 1944 in Winterset to Harold “Joe” and Ruby (Newbury) Bruett. The Bruett Family consisted of Darrell and his three sisters, Sherryl, Vicky and Judy. After graduating from Winterset High School in 1962 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving for 4 years. His marriage to Ellen Wenck of Truro took place on July 8, 1967 in Patterson and raised two daughters, Lori “Annie” and Sheila. Throughout Darrell’s working career he and Ellen managed the Gold Rush Lanes in Winterset as well as being a proud business owner of a monument setting company. His last employment was as a Security Supervisor for the Lakeside Casino in Osceola. His favorite hobbies were fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing the slots with his wife and family; playing Cribbage which he was quite good at and Pitch. Having grown up with three sisters, Darrell enjoyed games of tickle torture, Snoopy Kisses and noogies of which he was usually the one giving them. He later enjoyed similar activities with his children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren from which they will have fond memories. He also thoroughly enjoyed going to car auctions with his brother-in-Law, “Wink” (Lanny Wenck). Darrell is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ellen Bruett of Winterset; his daughters, Lori “Annie” (Brian) Weaver of Winterset; Sheila Kay Bruett of Lorimor; his sisters, Vicky (Jerry) Mease of Winterset; Judy (Steve) Allen of Janesville, WI; a brother-in-law, Hank Van Kooten of Winterset; 4 grandchildren, Gavin L. J. (Erin) Weaver of Ankeny; Jake Weaver of Winterset; Caleb and Emily Bass of Lorimor and 1 great granddaughter; Ava Weaver of Ankeny; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sherryl Van Kooten.
