David E. Garoutte

Dave Garoutte of Adel went to be with his Lord on April 24, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinsons. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, April 28 at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren with burial following at Church of the Brethren Cemetery at Panther Creek . Friends may call after 3:00 pm Friday, April 27 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel, where family will greet friends from 5:00 to7:00 pm. David Everett Garoutte was born April 18, 1945 in Dexter, Iowa to Francis Everett and Dorothy (Burnett) Garoutte. He grew up on a farm southwest of Adel and was a born farmer. He graduated from Adel-De Soto High School in 1964. He then attended Muscatine Community College and earned a degree in Agri-Business. On December 30, 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Messamer. After his graduation they returned to the family farm where Dave farmed with his dad until he enlisted in the army in 1968. In 1969, he was sent to Vietnam. After his discharge in 1971, he once again returned to the farm. He was a member of the Dallas County Farm Bureau, IA., Cattlemen’s Association and Post 464 of the American Legion in Adel. Dave was a good neighbor—always willing to stop what he was doing to help someone else. He would scoop out driveways in the winter and feed people’s pets and livestock when they were gone and was helpful in many other ways. He also served his church whenever he could, including as head usher for 14 years. Dave was a friend, mentor and role model for all his nieces and nephews, and many neighbor kids over the years. They have many fond memories of time spent “farming” with Dave. He was a strong man, but also a kind, gentle, patient and loving man and will be greatly missed. Left behind to mourn him are his wife, Sharon; sister, Mary Virginia (Stan) Lunstrum; brothers, James (Sandy) and Michael W. (Pat); brothers-in-law, David Messamer and Kelly (Kathy) Messamer; numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
