A service of remembrance was held 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry, Iowa. Words of comfort were provided by Diana Guidry. Burial was Wednesday, March 28, 2010 in Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn, Iowa. David Joe Smothers, son of Elza Ray Smothers and Mercedes Marie Moore, was born November 5, 1942 in Berkley, Iowa and died March 22, 2012 at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry, Iowa at the age of 69. Joe was born and raised in Berkley and Rippey where he attended school in Berkley until eighth grade. He went to ninth through eleventh grade at Rippey High School. Joe was united in marriage with Janice Bandy on February 17, 1962 in Perry, Iowa. The couple made their home throughout the years in the Perry and Berkley areas. Joe worked for Oscar Mayer in the meat packing plant and as a mason laying bricks. He enjoyed mowing, fishing, and camping. Joe also enjoyed bowling and NASCAR; he was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan. Joe was a councilman in Berkley for 19 years and served as Mayor pro-term and Mayor of Berkley. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sandra, a brother-in-law James, and aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Janice, three sons: Michael (Linda) Smothers of Perry, Mitchell Smothers of Ogden, and Matthew Smothers of Perry, one daughter, Barbara (Chris) Rosenbaum of Texas; a brother, Dennis Smothers of Bouton; a sister, Sarah (Larry) Hein of Perry; eight grandchildren: Jessica and Josh Abbe of Texas; Jason, Karie, Zachary Smothers of Perry; Tiffanie (Jacob) Bonesteel of Des Moines; and Tannah and David Smothers of Perry; three step grandchildren: Junior Mohr and Tina Jung of Beaver; and Anna Naber of Perry. Joe is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren: Brayden and Baylee Garnes of Des Moines, Zayden Smothers of Perry; and Chase Jamieson of Boone; three brothers-in-law: Tom of Missouri, Larry and Pat both from Perry; two sisters-in-law: Diana of Kansas and Esther of North Carolina; and one aunt, Laura Smothers of Des Moines. www.hastingsfh.com
