It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Lee Schrodt, 81, of Winterset, who left us peacefully on August 5, 2024. Born on October 30, 1942, in Creston, Iowa, he lived a full life, including many hobbies, such as woodworking, fishing, camping, and building train sets and dollhouses for his grandchildren.
He joined the Air Force following high school and married Donna Walters. They eventually moved to Florida, where Dave became a firefighter and spent many years protecting his community. After his years in the fire service, he enjoyed building homes before moving back to Iowa, and then he transitioned into a project manager role.
A Chicago Cubs fan, Dave often reminisced about the thrill of their victories and the agonies of defeat. He had a knack for bringing joy to those around him, whether it was with his signature tickling of cheeks using his mustache or his hilarious impersonation of Donald Duck, which never failed to make the kids giggle. His biggest source of pride was watching his grandchildren thrive in their various activities.
Dave is survived by his son, Andrew; daughter-in-law, Sara; grandchildren, Rebecca (Andy) Rushenberg, Gracen (Garrett Tyler), Sam, and Chloe Schrodt; two precious great-grandchildren, Nora and Caroline; and four siblings, Duane (Marsha) Schrodt, Susie (the late Jim) Anglin, Pam Wiggins, and Kelly (Betty) Huff; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his daughter, Michelle; and his parents, Francis and Pauline.
Per Dave’s wishes, the family will not be hosting a public service but will instead hold a private graveside gathering. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Madison County Hospital (300 W. Hutchings St, Winterset, IA 50273) or the ALS Association (1501 42nd St #470, West Des Moines, IA 50266).
