David Lee Smith Sr. went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2024.  He passed away in Des Moines, IA, under the home care of St. Croix Hospice.

He was born on March 7, 1942, in Des Moines, the son of Lloyd R. and Elaine (Solyst) Smith.  David graduated from North High School in 1960. attended Trinity College in Deerfield, IL, where he played sports and sang in the Trinity Male Choir.  At Trinity he met his sweetheart, Joyce Peterson. They were married on December 29, 1962, in Greeley, CO, at the home of the bride.

As a young boy, David got his start in sales as a paperboy.  He had not one, but two routes for the Des Moines Register and Tribune.  He won several sales contests, resulting in a trip to Chicago and a new Schwinn bicycle.

As an adult he continued in sales.  He worked for Bakers Shoes, where he won many awards for outstanding customer service.  Later, he became a district manager for the Des Moines Register and Tribune, where he won several Publishers Awards and a gold ring for outstanding performance in circulation sales and service.  Also, in his work for ABDick, as a photocopier sales representative, David won a free trip to Hawaii.

A devoted Christian, David attended Westchester Evangelical Free Church and various branches of the Salvation Army.

David enjoyed trout fishing, golf, and spending summers at his Colorado Springs home.  He also liked refereeing basketball and baseball games. He had the ability to strike up a friendly conversation with anyone.

David is survived by his wife of sixty years, Joyce; his children, Richard (Michele), Shelly, David Jr. (Jory); four grandchildren, Peter, Joy, Kaylee, and Kendra; his siblings, Lloyd Jr. (Susan) Smith, Lois Smith-Underwood, and Mary Parker; and nine nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Daniel Smith, and numerous brother and sister-in-laws.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale, IA 50322.  Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral to take place at 11:00a.m.  Luncheon will follow.  A private family interment will take place at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery, Urbandale, IA
