David O’Neil Creighton, Sr., 85, passed away on December 8, 2023. He was born on July 27, 1938 to William Creighton and Ruby Kearney in Waterloo, Iowa. He was All-City in high school attending Roosevelt, North and then Dowling Catholic graduating in 1956.
In service to his country, David enlisted in the US Navy from 1958 to 1962, embodying the spirit of duty and sacrifice. Serving on the USS Hector in the Pacific fleet. Following his military service, he ventured into the culinary world, realizing his dream of entrepreneurship by establishing the beloved diner, "David O's." Which lasted 378 days.
Transitioning through various career paths, David found success at Friedman Motors before delving into the insurance industry in 1971. His commitment and excellence in the field earned him the prestigious title of PIA Agent of the Year—an accolade that underscored his dedication to his profession. David managed many independent insurance agencies which eventually became The Bryton Companies in 1988. He retired in 2020 still taking care of his customers personally.
With a career spanning over three decades, he contributed immensely to the state's financial landscape. For 12 years, he served diligently on the Iowa State Cosmetology Board, demonstrating a commitment to excellence in the field.
David's financial acumen was further showcased during his impressive 18-year tenure on the IPERS Investment Board. His insights and dedication played a pivotal role in shaping investment strategies that would impact countless lives.
Beyond his professional achievements, David cultivated a sense of community as a member of the Hyperion Field Club since 1980. His involvement and leadership in this close-knit community spoke volumes about his commitment to relationships and shared experiences.
A man of unwavering commitment, David found solace in both the church and AA meetings, embodying a balance that reflected his deep spiritual convictions and dedication to community support. His profound impact on countless lives within the AA community will be remembered as a testament to his generosity and kindness. Beyond his dedication to recovery, David found joy on the golf course, where he proudly achieved the remarkable feat of seven holes in one. An avid storyteller, he would gladly share the details of his golfing triumphs with anyone willing to listen. For over 50 years, David served as the enthusiastic Captain of Canadian fishing trips. Winning the coveted Captain's Hat 7 times while creating enduring memories for friends and family alike. His passion for adventure and camaraderie was a testament to his vibrant spirit.
A man of warmth and compassion, David's presence was a source of comfort and joy for those fortunate enough to call him family. Whether through shared laughter, heartfelt conversations, or quiet moments of understanding, he built meaningful connections that will endure in the hearts of his loved ones.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Norm; sons, David (Kristi) Creighton Jr and Justin (Lauren) Creighton.; daughter Jennie (Brad Tison) Creighton; grandchildren Colby, David III (Claire), Matthew, Kelsey, Ashby, Kaleb, Mannika, Ruby and Lilly; brothers-in-law, Steve Speltz, Joe Speltz, Tim (Deb) Speltz; sisters-in-law, Connie (Paul) Deeny, Cathy (John Lechtenberg), Jenny (Bob) Mikota, Mary (Bryan) Mikota, Theresa (Louie) Jirak and Rose (James) Armstrong. He is preceded in death by his father, William Creighton, mother, Ruby Kearney, brother, Bill Creighton, father-in-law, Red Speltz, mother-in-law, Marie Speltz, brother-in-law, James “OJ” Norman Speltz and sister-in-law Mary Speltz.
The family of Dave extends heartfelt gratitude to Suncrest Hospice and Cedar Ridge Village for their exceptional care and kindness during a challenging time. Dave was also forever grateful to have received a kidney donation in 2016 after only 8 days on the wait list. He strongly encourages all of you to consider being an organ donor.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be donated to AA Central Iowa in honor of Dave's 56 years of commitment to recovery and supporting others on their journey.
